Tijan is a mature bird guide with over 25 year’s ornithological experience in The Gambia. Originally Tijan trained under Clive Barlow (Co-author of the field guide “bible” of the area – “A Field Guide to Birds of The Gambia and Senegal”), when Clive operated out of the Atlantic Hotel in Banjul.
Tijan lives in Sifoe on the southern border of Gambia near the Casamance, where he met his wife, Today, with 6 of his children in the family compound (and other family in true Gambian style) Tijan is a busy, respected and good natured companion guide.
Having travelled to the UK Bird Fair in 2005 to promote himself, Tijan has achieved a friendly group of visiting clients. These clients have helped Tijan purchase a good reliable Mitsubishi L300 8-seat people carrier. This enables comfortable visits up-river from the West Atlantic coastline for potential clients (absolutely essential considering the poor quality of the in-land roads).

With three different tribal languages, exceptional English and a working understanding of French, Tijan can admirably cope with any location in Senegal or the Gambia. As a professional guide and a member of the Gambian Bird Guide Association, he often has a trainee guide with him, so long as the situation allows for this.

All members of the Gambian Bird Guide Association have agreed basic unilateral fees which are available to view on their website www.gambianbirdguides.com and like most of the competent guides within the association; fees are negotiable for parties and more remote geographical destinations.

Given the opportunity Tijan will enthuse you with his love of the Gambia and entice you away from the West Coastline into the middle and upper river divisions, in particular into Niokolo-Koba National Park in Senegal to visit Simenti* and the beginning of the river Gambia. Look on this as a last final treat for any one who considers they have exhausted the “birding” in the region and an adventure you may find yourself wanting to repeat!
